DREW, Miss. — A $7.7 million manufacturing investment is bringing new economic opportunities to Sunflower County as startup company Koinonia prepares to establish operations in Drew.
The project is expected to create 18 jobs over the next five years and put an existing industrial property back into productive use.
For a small Mississippi Delta community, the investment represents an opportunity to strengthen the local economy and expand manufacturing employment.
Bringing an Existing Facility Back to Life
Koinonia plans to purchase and rehabilitate a 40,000-square-foot building in Sunflower County.
The company will install manufacturing equipment and prepare approximately 150,000 square feet of surrounding concrete surface for potential future expansion.
Its initial focus will be manufacturing plastic packaging products for the agricultural chemical industry.
The company also plans to explore additional packaging applications as demand develops.
Operations are expected to begin by January 2027.
Creating Opportunities for Local Workers
The project is expected to generate 18 positions over five years.
Although that number may appear modest compared with larger industrial announcements, new manufacturing jobs can have a meaningful effect in smaller communities.
Employment opportunities can support household incomes, create demand for local services and encourage additional economic activity.
Sunflower County economic development officials have emphasized the potential benefits of locally manufactured products serving regional industries.
State and Local Support
The Mississippi Development Authority is supporting the project through the Mississippi Flexible Tax Incentive program, commonly known as MFLEX.
Sunflower County is also providing support.
Gov. Tate Reeves welcomed the announcement, pointing to the benefits of revitalizing existing industrial property and attracting investment.
The project reflects a broader effort to encourage manufacturing businesses to establish operations outside Mississippi’s larger metropolitan areas.
Looking Toward January
The company must still complete facility improvements, equipment installation and other preparations before production begins.
The 18 jobs are projected rather than positions already filled.
For Drew, the immediate significance is the commitment to invest millions of dollars in a local industrial facility.
If completed as planned, the project could establish a new manufacturing employer and provide a foundation for future expansion.
