Clarksdale, Mississippi — The Clarksdale Police Department has named Corporal Markel Sanders its Officer of the Month for January 2026, recognizing his exceptional police work, quick thinking, and commitment to public safety during a recent incident at Northwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center.
Corporal Sanders earned this distinction following his response to a reported vehicle break-in at the medical center. Upon arriving at the scene, he immediately noticed fresh footprints in the snow—an observation that proved critical to the case. Demonstrating sharp awareness and determination, Cpl. Sanders followed the trail, which led him directly to a suspect attempting to flee on foot.
After a brief foot pursuit, Corporal Sanders successfully apprehended the suspect, preventing further escape and bringing the situation under control. His actions did not stop there. Through continued diligence and strong teamwork with his shift, a second suspect connected to the incident was later identified, located, and arrested.
Department leadership praised Corporal Sanders for his attention to detail, persistence, and professionalism. The incident serves as a clear example of proactive policing and the importance of officers remaining alert to even the smallest details while on duty.

The Officer of the Month honor was presented under the leadership of Chief Vincent Ramirez, with Assistant Chiefs Eric Bilbro and Johnny Jones also commending Corporal Sanders for his outstanding performance.
