CLARKSDALE, Miss. — Despite rainy weather conditions, more than 300 young athletes turned out for the 5th Annual Elgton Jenkins and JT Gray Football Camp, proving that a little rain could not dampen the excitement surrounding one of Clarksdale’s most anticipated youth events.
Originally scheduled to be held outdoors, the camp was moved to the campus of Coahoma Community College due to inclement weather. Even with the change in venue, participants still had the opportunity to get outside and participate in drills during periods of light rain.
The annual camp is hosted by former Clarksdale High School and Mississippi State University teammates Elgton Jenkins and J.T. Gray, who return home each year to invest in the next generation of athletes.
“It was a pleasure coming back, even though it was raining, to see the kids still having a good time,” Jenkins said.
Jenkins recently signed with the Cleveland Browns after spending his NFL career with the Green Bay Packers. Reflecting on his time in Green Bay, Jenkins expressed appreciation for the organization and fans.
“It was nothing but love with the Packers,” Jenkins said. “The process of leaving Green Bay was short and sweet. I feel like we’re moving in the right direction with Cleveland. We had a good draft and added some young players, along with three veteran offensive linemen to help strengthen the lineup.”
Gray, who recently joined the Philadelphia Eagles, shared his excitement about the upcoming season and adapting to a new environment.
“I’m ready for the season to start so I can go do what I do best,” Gray said. “It’s a new team and a new system, but I’m ready. Being a part of a Super Bowl-winning organization has its perks, and I’m feeling good about the offseason.”
Gray also acknowledged the challenge that comes with joining a new team but embraced the opportunity.
“It’s always a challenge going to a new team,” Gray said. “It would be a dream if I could play against Elgton in the Super Bowl.”
The longtime friends and former teammates remain close despite playing for different organizations.
“Me and Gray talk a lot,” Jenkins said. “We text each other regularly just to check on one another.”
While football fundamentals were a major focus of the camp, Jenkins and Gray emphasized the importance of education and character development. Throughout the day, they encouraged participants to work hard in the classroom and on the field, reminding them that success in sports begins with discipline and dedication.
“We do this for the kids,” Jenkins said. “We mark this on our calendars every year. I wouldn’t miss it for anything in the world. We had great coaches who took the time to pour into us when we were young, and now it’s our turn to give back.”
The event featured football drills, instruction from coaches and volunteers, and several giveaways. Trophies were awarded to outstanding participants, and lucky campers had the chance to win prizes, including PlayStation 5 gaming consoles.
Gray expressed gratitude to everyone who braved the weather to attend.
“I want to thank everybody who came out to support us, especially in the rain,” he said.
For many of the young athletes in attendance, the opportunity to learn from two NFL players who once walked the same halls and played on the same fields was an unforgettable experience. As the camp celebrated its fifth year, Jenkins and Gray once again demonstrated that their commitment to the youth of Clarksdale extends far beyond football.
