CLARKSDALE, Miss. — Former Coahoma County High School standout Nakia Cheatham has reached another major milestone in her basketball career, officially signing her first professional basketball contract with Vimpelin Veto in Finland. Cheatham is set to begin her professional career overseas this October.
The signing comes after an exceptional collegiate career in which Cheatham established herself as one of the premier players in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). During her final season, she was named SWAC Defensive Player of the Year, earned First Team All-SWAC honors, received Preseason All-SWAC recognition, and was selected as SWAC Player of the Week six times.
Vimpelin Veto Head Coach Jussuo Sainio believes Cheatham will make an immediate impact on the team’s success.
“Cheatnum is an excellent reinforcement for our team,” Sainio said. “The potential of her attacking the paint will be high for us this year.”
He also praised her defensive ability and relentless style of play.
“Cheatnum was one of the best defenders in the conference during her college career and is an extremely versatile player, an extremely hard player and competitor. She will adapt to the team really well,” Sainio said.
Before her collegiate success, Cheatham built an impressive athletic résumé at Coahoma County High School. Along with excelling on the basketball court, she won two Mississippi state championships in track and field, showcasing the speed, athleticism, and determination that have helped propel her to the professional level.
Cheatham’s journey from Coahoma County to the international stage is a testament to years of dedication, discipline, and hard work. Her signing marks another proud moment for Coahoma County High School and the Mississippi Delta, as one of its own prepares to compete professionally in Europe.
As she begins this exciting new chapter with Vimpelin Veto, Nakia Cheatham carries with her the support of her hometown community and serves as an inspiration to young athletes who dream of turning their passion into a professional career. Her story is proof that talent, perseverance, and commitment can open doors far beyond the Mississippi Delta.
