CLARKSDALE, Miss. — Along Delta Avenue in downtown Clarksdale, Collective Seed & Supply Co. is putting a modern spin on the traditional neighborhood general store.
Located at 145 Delta Avenue, the independent business combines a garden center and general store, offering plants, seeds, gardening supplies, specialty foods, home goods, books, gifts and locally made products.
Collective Seed opened in 2018 as a project of Coahoma Collective, a nonprofit focused on arts-driven and community-centered development in Clarksdale. Travelers Hotel, another Coahoma Collective project, followed in 2019.
The store occupies the former location of Miss Del’s General Store, continuing the building’s retail history while introducing a new concept centered around gardening, creativity and community.
Collective Seed also contributes to downtown activity by giving residents and visitors another locally operated place to shop and explore. Its connection with the Downtown Clarksdale Farmers Market has further supported access to locally grown produce and encouraged community activity downtown.
The business is part of a larger story of small-business development in Clarksdale. While major investments often receive the most attention, independent businesses can also play an important role in revitalization by filling storefronts, attracting visitors and encouraging people to spend locally.
Eight years after opening, Collective Seed & Supply Co. continues to offer a shopping experience with a distinctly Clarksdale character.
Its story is a reminder that community growth can begin with a storefront, an idea and a willingness to plant something that can grow.
