GREENVILLE, Miss. — A new Greenville exhibit opening later this week will turn attention to the Mississippi Delta’s musical legacy and one of the region’s influential blues artists.
The Greenville Arts Council is preparing to open “Son Ford Thomas at 100 and Highway 61 Revisited” on Thursday, Sept. 10.
The exhibit will be housed at the council’s location at 323 S. Main Street and is scheduled to remain on display through Oct. 10.
The program places the work and legacy of Son Thomas within a larger conversation about the music, people and places connected to Highway 61.
The highway has become one of the most recognized routes in American music history, running through communities strongly associated with the blues and the Mississippi Delta.
For Greenville, the exhibit also arrives during a month filled with blues-related programming.
The city’s annual Blues Week is scheduled for Sept. 14–18, followed by the 49th Annual Mississippi Delta Blues & Heritage Festival on Sept. 19.
Together, the events provide residents and visitors with multiple opportunities to explore the Delta’s musical heritage through art, history and live performance.
The Greenville Arts Council exhibit offers a quieter, gallery-centered complement to the festival atmosphere.
It also highlights the importance of preserving the stories of Delta musicians whose influence often traveled far beyond the communities where they lived and performed.
The exhibit is scheduled to open Sept. 10 and continue through Oct. 10.
For the Mississippi Delta, projects like this are not only cultural events. They also help document and preserve a musical history that remains an important part of the region’s identity and tourism economy.
