Clarksdale, Mississippi – The Town of Jonestown officially completed its annexation in June, expanding its corporate limits and adding new territory as local leaders work to create more opportunities for growth and development.
Mayor Columbus Russell Jr. announced the expansion in a social media post, calling the milestone a significant step for the community.
“This is more than just adding land to a map,” Russell wrote. “It gives us more room to grow, attract investment, pursue development, expand our tax base, and plan for the future of Jonestown.”
The annexation comes as Jonestown, a small Delta community with deep agricultural and rural roots, looks to strengthen its economic foundation while preparing for future development. The newly incorporated areas give the town additional space to consider residential and commercial growth, infrastructure improvements, and other investments that could benefit the community.
For a town surrounded by agricultural land and shaped by rural life, expansion presents both an opportunity and a responsibility. Strategic growth could help Jonestown increase its tax base and municipal resources while creating conditions for new businesses, housing, and public improvements.
Russell characterized the annexation as the beginning of a larger effort rather than an end in itself.
“We’re growing our boundaries, but more importantly, we’re growing our possibilities,” he said.
Significant work remains, including determining how the newly annexed areas will be developed and ensuring that growth translates into tangible benefits for residents. Still, the completion of the annexation gives Jonestown greater room to plan, invest, and pursue opportunities that were previously outside its municipal boundaries.
“Jonestown is growing, and we’re just getting started,” Russell said.
The Town of Jonestown appears poised for a promising future.
