LULA, Miss. — Fifteen Boys & Girls Clubs members from Clarksdale and Jonestown recently received a behind-the-scenes introduction to hospitality careers during a workforce-exploration visit in Coahoma County.
The students visited Isle Casino Hotel Lula, where employees discussed the work performed by hotel, food-service, security, human-resources and guest-service departments.
The trip was supported by a $10,000 Caesars Foundation grant awarded to Boys & Girls Clubs of the Mississippi Delta through the Caesars Makes Change initiative. The funding supports the organization’s Future Ready programming, which connects young people with career information and workplace experiences.
During the visit, participating students met employees from several departments and learned about the skills, training and responsibilities associated with different positions. They also toured the human-resources operation and asked employees questions about entering the hospitality industry.
Although hospitality properties include highly visible customer-service positions, their operations also depend on workers in administration, culinary services, safety, technology, maintenance and event management.
The visit brought together members from two Boys & Girls Clubs locations, allowing students from Clarksdale and Jonestown to explore career options alongside peers from another Delta community.
Boys & Girls Clubs officials said similar experiences can help young people connect their classroom education with jobs available in the region.
