Flood Watch Issued for Coahoma, Quitman and Tunica Counties as Heavy Rain Threatens North Mississippi

By MDA Staff Writer | October 9, 2026

MISSISSIPPI DELTA — Residents in several northern Mississippi Delta counties are being urged to monitor changing weather conditions after the National Weather Service issued a flood watch ahead of a period of potentially heavy rainfall.

The watch includes Coahoma, Quitman and Tunica counties and is scheduled to remain in effect from late Friday night through Sunday morning.

According to the National Weather Service, excessive rainfall could produce flooding in portions of northern Mississippi and western Tennessee.

The advisory comes as Hurricane Isaias approaches the northern Gulf Coast, raising concerns about severe weather across parts of the southeastern United States.

For Delta communities, the immediate concern is the possibility of heavy rainfall overwhelming drainage systems, flooding low-lying areas and creating hazardous driving conditions.

A flood watch means conditions are favorable for flooding, but flooding is not necessarily occurring.

Residents should pay particular attention to roads that commonly collect standing water, especially in rural areas where visibility and drainage may be limited.

Motorists are advised not to drive through flooded roadways because water depth and road damage can be difficult to determine.

Families should also monitor official weather alerts, keep mobile devices charged and review emergency plans in case conditions deteriorate.

The National Weather Service will continue updating its forecasts and advisories as the weather system moves through the region.

Residents can obtain the latest warnings through the National Weather Service and local emergency-management agencies.

The Mississippi Delta Advocate will continue following developments affecting Delta communities.
