GREENVILLE, Miss. — The Greenville Fire Department has entered a new chapter in leadership following the swearing-in of Antonio Smith as the city’s fire chief.

Mayor Errick D. Simmons administered the oath of office, formally welcoming Smith to a department responsible for protecting residents, businesses and property throughout the community.

The city announced the leadership transition in information reported November 3.

Smith, who is from Monroe, Louisiana, brings more than 29 years of experience in fire service, according to information attributed to Greenville officials.

His appointment follows action by the Greenville City Council authorizing his hiring in an order dated September 15, 2026.

The appointment places an experienced fire service professional in charge of a department that responds to fires and other emergencies in one of the Mississippi Delta’s major cities.

As Greenville welcomed Smith, city officials also acknowledged the contributions of the department’s previous leadership.

The city thanked former Fire Chief Brown for his service and recognized Interim Fire Chief Keith Boston for helping guide the department through the leadership transition.

Such transitions are important for maintaining continuity in emergency response operations, where coordination, training and operational readiness remain essential.

The Greenville Fire Department serves a community where residential neighborhoods, commercial businesses and industrial facilities require a broad range of emergency response capabilities.

The chief’s responsibilities include overseeing department operations and helping maintain readiness for emergencies.

Smith’s appointment comes as communities throughout the Mississippi Delta continue to confront the challenges of protecting residents, maintaining emergency equipment and supporting first responders.

City officials have not yet provided a detailed public agenda outlining specific operational changes Smith intends to pursue.

As Smith begins his leadership role, residents will have an opportunity to learn more about his priorities for the department.

His experience will be an important part of the city’s efforts to maintain effective fire protection and emergency services.

For Greenville, the appointment represents both a leadership transition and a continued commitment to public safety.
