Big Changes Ahead for Delta High School Sports as Mississippi Announces New Classifications

By MDA Sports Desk | October 28, 2026

MISSISSIPPI DELTA — High school athletics across Mississippi are preparing for changes after the Mississippi High School Activities Association released new school classifications for the 2027–2029 cycle.

The classifications organize schools according to adjusted enrollment and determine the size-based divisions in which they will compete.

For Mississippi Delta communities, the new alignment provides an early look at how schools will be grouped in upcoming athletic seasons.

South Panola and Cleveland Central in Class 6A

South Panola High School and Cleveland Central High School appear in the newly announced Class 6A group.

The published figures list South Panola with an adjusted enrollment of 834 and Cleveland Central with 620.

Both schools are included in a 24-school classification that also contains Grenada, Warren Central, Pearl and other programs.

The grouping does not necessarily mean every school listed will compete against every other school during the regular season.

Specific regional assignments and schedules are separate considerations.

Greenville and Greenwood Listed in Class 5A

Greenville High School and Greenwood High School are included in the new Class 5A group.

The published adjusted enrollment figures are 566 for Greenville and 490 for Greenwood.

Holmes County Central is also listed in Class 5A, with an adjusted enrollment of 491.

The three schools will be grouped with programs including Vicksburg, Natchez, West Point and Columbus.

How Classifications Are Determined

Mississippi organizes its member schools into seven classifications, ranging from 1A to 7A.

Class 7A contains the largest schools, while Class 1A includes the smallest.

The classification process uses adjusted enrollment figures rather than athletic performance.

Under association rules, schools with identical enrollment figures at a classification boundary are placed together in the higher classification.

The approach is intended to establish competition groups based primarily on school size.

What This Means for Delta Athletics

Classification changes can affect future regional assignments, postseason competition and travel requirements.

They may also influence which schools become regular opponents.

However, the classification announcement alone does not establish new rivalry games or finalized schedules.

Those details will depend on subsequent regional alignments and scheduling decisions.

Looking Toward 2027

The new classifications are intended for the 2027–2029 cycle.

Athletes, coaches and families will have time to review the changes before they take effect.

For Mississippi Delta sports programs, the announcement begins another planning period as schools prepare for future competition.
