Clarksdale, Mississippi– On Sunday, July 19, more than 160 community members gathered in [location] for an afternoon of food, games, prizes, school supplies, and fellowship during the annual community giveaway hosted by Cupcakes and Prayers LLC.
Founded by Clarksdale native Melody Cox, Cupcakes and Prayers LLC is more than a business. Cox said the company inspired her to find meaningful ways to give back to the community that helped shape her, leading her to launch the annual giveaway in 2017.
Each year, Cox returns to Clarksdale to provide children and families with a day of fun, encouragement, and support while creating opportunities for the community to come together.
“I started Cupcakes and Prayers because I wanted to build something that could be a blessing to other people,” Cox said. “God has continued to bless my business, and I believe those blessings are meant to be shared. That’s why I started this giveaway. Every year, He provides exactly what we need, and that’s what keeps me coming back.”
This year’s event was held in the parking lot of 61 and Garfield Grocery, owned by Nigel Luster. Although the giveaway has been an annual tradition since 2017, this marked the first year the grocery store served as the host site.
Luster said he was honored to welcome the event and hopes to continue making his property available for community gatherings.
“It means a lot to be able to host something that’s making a positive difference,” Luster said. “Our children and families deserve opportunities like this, and if I can play a small part by providing the space, then I’m happy to do it. As long as I’m able, I hope we can continue hosting events like this for years to come.”
Throughout the afternoon, children enjoyed games, families shared free meals, and community members received school supplies and prizes. The event brought together neighbors, volunteers, and local supporters in an atmosphere focused on generosity, fellowship, and community.
Although Cox now lives in South Dakota, she said Clarksdale will always be home.
“I just want people to know that Clarksdale is my hometown, and the kids are my heart,” Cox said. “I’d do whatever I can for them. Even though I now live in South Dakota, I’ll continue traveling home every year because these children deserve to know someone believes in them and is willing to invest in their future.”
Now in its ninth year, the annual giveaway continues to reflect the mission behind Cupcakes and Prayers LLC by turning business success into community service. With the support of local businesses, volunteers, and residents, the event remains a testament to the impact one person’s commitment to giving back can have on an entire community.
