Clarksdale, MS — On the evening of March 20, 2026, the CARES Clarksdale Animal Rescue Effort and Shelter hosted its CARES-aoke Fundraiser Night, a karaoke-themed event dedicated to raising funds for maintenance and animal care at the local shelter. Entry proceeds from the event were donated directly to the organization. Laughter and banter filled the air as classic songs created a lively atmosphere, complemented by soft twinkle lighting at the Auberge Hostel in downtown Clarksdale.
Held annually, the event supports a team of volunteers responsible for rescuing and caring for abandoned animals throughout the city. The shelter provides daily care for more than 70 cats and dogs while also responding to new rescue needs as they arise.
CARES operates under a no-kill shelter policy, allowing for a high intake of rescue animals. While this approach saves lives, it also places increasing pressure on available space and resources. As the shelter continues to accept animals in need, financial demands remain a constant challenge, affecting the level of services it can provide.
Gabrielle Antici, board president, says the organization’s yearly operating budget ranges from $435,000 to $450,000 and is funded largely by city and county support. She emphasizes that fundraisers like CARES-aoke play a critical role in helping cover the additional costs required to maintain quality care. She also notes that continued animal intake supports not only the well-being of the animals but also the safety and overall quality of life for Clarksdale residents.
Stray animals present ongoing concerns within the community. Unattended dogs can pose safety risks to pedestrians and domesticated pets and may contribute to the spread of disease. Reducing the number of animals on the streets benefits both public health and the city’s overall environment.
In addition to shelter services, CARES provides support to local pet owners through its Pet Food Bank. Sponsored by Chewy, the program distributes free dog and cat food on the first and third Wednesday of each month, helping families care for their pets during times of need.
Although much of the shelter’s work is powered by volunteers, a small team of paid staff ensures consistent daily operations. Veterinary care, including immunizations, heartworm treatment, and routine medical expenses, accounts for a significant portion of the organization’s costs.
Community support remains essential to sustaining these efforts. The Clarksdale Animal Rescue Effort and Shelter is open Monday through Friday at 1645 Desoto Avenue in Clarksdale.
