CLEVELAND, Miss. — GRAMMY Museum Mississippi is adding a different kind of rhythm to its fall programming with the launch of a free ballroom dancing series beginning Tuesday.
“Ballroom Dancing in the Delta” begins Sept. 8 and will introduce participants to several traditional dance styles, including rumba, foxtrot, waltz, swing, tango and cha-cha.
The classes will be led by Cassandra Burney Walter and are designed for both beginners and participants who already have some dance experience.
Organizers say the program will also explore the connection between music and dance traditions, with an emphasis on Delta culture and recordings from across generations.
Participants do not need to bring a partner.
Classes for children ages 8 to 18 are scheduled from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m., followed by adult classes from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Each week will focus on different dance styles, giving participants an opportunity to learn at their own pace while experiencing music in a new way.
The program expands the museum’s role beyond traditional exhibits.
Since opening in Cleveland, GRAMMY Museum Mississippi has developed educational and community programs that use music as a tool for learning, movement and cultural engagement.
The ballroom series continues that approach by connecting music with physical activity and social participation.
The first week will introduce rumba and foxtrot. Later sessions are expected to include waltz, swing, tango and cha-cha.
The program runs through Dec. 3.
GRAMMY Museum Mississippi is located at 800 W. Sunflower Road in Cleveland.
