Greenville’s New Federal Courthouse Opens Downtown, Moving Court Proceedings to Washington Avenue

GREENVILLE, Miss. — A long-awaited addition to downtown Greenville has opened its doors. The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Mississippi announced that its Greenville Division has relocated to a new federal courthouse at 219 Washington Avenue, with the building opening to the public on October 7, 2026.

The move marks a major change for people who attend federal court proceedings in Washington County. The court says proceedings previously noticed for its former Main Street location will be reset for the new Washington Avenue courthouse.

A new downtown landmark

The courthouse was designed as both a working federal judicial facility and a prominent addition to Greenville’s historic downtown. Plans described a three-story building with two courtrooms, judicial chambers and offices serving federal court operations.

Its architectural design pairs a modern glass-enclosed courtroom structure with landscaped outdoor space, a concept intended to connect the public building to its Mississippi Delta surroundings. The project’s design team drew inspiration from the area’s history and the idea of a “lantern on the levee.”

The U.S. General Services Administration awarded the construction contract to Robins & Morton in 2022. Federal officials described the project as an investment in modern court facilities and downtown Greenville.

What visitors need to know

People with federal court business should take note of the new street address: 219 Washington Avenue, Greenville, MS 38701. The district court says the Greenville clerk’s office remains open by appointment only; the new courthouse does not have a walk-in public filing counter. Paper filings should be mailed to Oxford or delivered in person to the court’s Oxford or Aberdeen locations, according to the court’s instructions.

Visitors should check their updated court notices and official court information before traveling. The court has said it plans a grand-opening celebration, but its October 1 public-opening notice did not announce a date for that ceremony.

For Greenville, the opening brings years of planning and construction to a visible milestone. For the wider Mississippi Delta, it provides a new setting for federal judicial proceedings and a striking civic presence in the heart of downtown.
