CLARKSDALE, Miss. — An international message of peace and unity will make its way through Clarksdale this weekend as the Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run, the world’s largest peace torch relay, travels through the Mississippi Delta on Saturday morning, May 9.
The Peace Run, founded in 1987, is an international torch relay dedicated to promoting friendship, harmony, and understanding among people of all cultures and backgrounds. This year’s journey carries special significance as runners travel through all 50 states in honor of America’s 250th Anniversary.
An international team representing seven different countries is currently on a four-month, 10,000-mile journey across the United States, spreading the message that peace begins with each individual. Along the route, runners meet with schools, youth organizations, local leaders, and community groups, giving citizens an opportunity to share their hopes and dreams for peace.
The team is expected to cover approximately 90 miles on May 9, traveling from Hillhouse to Memphis along Route 322 and U.S. Highway 61 North while passing the symbolic Peace Torch from runner to runner.
For nearly four decades, the Peace Run has traveled through more than 160 nations across the globe, involving millions of participants and earning recognition from world leaders, athletes, and humanitarian figures. Organizers estimate that more than 50,000 children and students in over 1,000 communities across the United States will participate in this year’s events and educational presentations.
The relay was inspired by visionary Sri Chinmoy, who dedicated his life to promoting world harmony through athletics, art, music, and service. His philosophy emphasized action over words, encouraging people to create peace through daily living and human connection.
Residents traveling along Highway 61 North Saturday morning may catch a glimpse of the runners carrying the glowing Peace Torch as it makes its way through the Delta toward Memphis.
