Clarksdale, Mississippi – On August 24, 2026, Spring Initiative hosted its back to school Open House, showcasing the plans for this year to parents and community members. This event brought together staff, students and parents for an evening of fellowship and collective envisioning for the success of this school year.

With what they call a “16 year promise” Spring Initiative programming embodies an intentional  dedication to student and parent needs, nurturing a child from beginning of educational instruction to career and life beyond the structured school setting.

Anja Thiessen, the Co-Founder and Program Director at Spring Initiative states, “Children in the Delta deserve to have so much more opportunity than they have readily available to them. Just from being born here, they inherit inequality in funding and access. Our students have to live out the consequences of that so– In our limited capacity, we love to see that every student has that holistic support beyond just classroom needs, love and experience that will help carry them through life.”

Spring has a uniquely holistic program structure that follows students from first grade through the college process, with a curriculum that caters to the developmental needs of each respective group.

The younger ages receive more recreational and enrichment opportunities, taking trips learning the city and learning fundamentals. While there is a greater focus on workforce development, internships and other career support for older participants.

Thiessen attributes the growth and success to their many community partners like Griot, Higher Purpose Hub, RISE, Diaper Bank of the Delta and Baby University. Carnegie Public Library, Chancellor Court, CARESClarksdale Animal Rescue Effort and Shelter, and Urgent Primary Care are only a few of the community entities that will provide paid internship opportunities for high school students.

All age groups have access to therapists that work to help support overall wellness for students. This, coupled with their real world mentorship, internship, educational and recreational programming, makes Spring Initiative a sounding board and propeller to success and happiness for the students they impact.
