Jackson, Miss. (May 4, 2026) — The Institute for the Advancement of Minority Health (IAMH) is helping combat period poverty by providing free menstrual and postpartum hygiene products to individuals and families in need across Mississippi, including those who are Medicaid-eligible.
During Period Poverty Awareness Week (May 11–17), the Institute is highlighting the challenges many individuals face in accessing basic menstrual products and hygiene supplies. Period poverty refers to the inability to afford or access menstrual products. This issue affects individuals and families in communities across the United States and around the world. Lack of access can lead to missed school days, missed work, and emotional distress.
IAMH distributes essential items such as pads, tampons, liners, and postpartum supplies to support women and families, particularly those who are Medicaid-eligible. Many households face financial challenges that make purchasing these basic items difficult, often forcing families to choose between hygiene products and other household needs.
Research shows this burden falls heavily on underserved communities. Nearly one-quarter of Black and Latina individuals who menstruate report struggling to afford period products in the past year. More than one-third of low-income women report missing work, school, or similar events due to lack of access to period supplies.
By offering free products, IAMH continues its mission to reduce health disparities and improve access to essential resources. The organization recognizes that menstrual and postpartum care are basic health needs that should be accessible to everyone. Too many women and families—especially those who are Medicaid-eligible—struggle to afford the products they need each month or after childbirth.
Providing these items is one way IAMH supports health, dignity, and overall well-being across Mississippi communities. Community members in need of assistance or organizations interested in supporting this effort can contact Latasha Rice at lrice@advancingminorityhealth.org.
