MOORHEAD, Miss. — A Mississippi Delta Community College administrator has been selected for a statewide leadership position focused on online education.
Sarah Buchanan, MDCC’s coordinator of eLearning, has been named president-elect of the Mississippi eLearning Association, commonly known as MELA.
The association connects professionals involved in distance learning and educational technology. Its work provides opportunities for educators to exchange ideas about online instruction, student support and the effective use of technology in college courses.
MDCC President Dr. Steven Jones said Buchanan has spent more than two decades supporting students, faculty members and innovation in online learning.
Buchanan’s selection gives MDCC a leadership role in statewide conversations about virtual instruction. Online and hybrid courses can be especially important in rural areas, where work schedules, transportation and distance may prevent some students from regularly attending classes on campus.
MDCC is also preparing to host eLearning professionals from Mississippi’s 15 community colleges during the association’s annual retreat in September.
The gathering will allow participants to discuss practices and challenges affecting digital education across the state’s community-college system.
