JACKSON, Miss. (June 1, 2026) — What starts as a conversation in the barbershop could help save a life.  During Men’s Health Month, the Institute for the Advancement of Minority Health (IAMH) and the Black Men’s Health Equity Council are bringing health education, free screenings, and meaningful discussions directly to the community through the Choppin’ It Up Barbershop Series.

Held on from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Saturday, June 6, 2026, at A Kings Chopp, 117 North Street, Cleveland, Mississippi, this free community event will provide men and their families with access to information and resources designed to encourage healthier lifestyles and preventive care.  Refreshments will be served.

Mississippi men continue to experience disproportionately higher rates of chronic diseases such as heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and certain cancers. Early detection, preventive care, and healthy lifestyle choices play a critical role in reducing these disparities and improving their quality of life.  “Too often, men put their health on the back burner,” said Warren Jones, epidemiologist with the Institute for the Advancement of Minority Health. “This event meets men where they are, creates a comfortable environment for conversation, and provides the tools and information they need to take charge of their health. One conversation can lead to one screening, one doctor’s visit, or one lifestyle change that makes all the difference.”

The event is part of the Institute for the Advancement of Minority Health’s ongoing efforts to advance health equity and improve health outcomes in underserved communities throughout Mississippi.  Delta area men are encouraged to attend, bring a friend, and join the conversation.
