Clarksdale, MS – On April 8–9, Coahoma Community College Practical Nursing students attended the Mississippi Board of Nursing Annual Nursing Convention in Philadelphia, Mississippi. The convention was designed to establish camaraderie and emphasize safety among new nurses.
Over the course of two days, students attended seminars on medication safety, prioritization during urgent care situations, and maintaining mental and social wellness as new nurses. Tanedra Christian, president of the LPN Class of 2026, stated, “We are grateful for this experience to learn more about safe practices in nursing. Of course, we want to know more about how to protect our patients, ourselves, and our licenses. In the long run, safety is a daily concern in every encounter we have with a patient.”
The most notable of these training sessions was a human trafficking seminar hosted by the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office. This training taught future nurses the importance of identifying and responding to potential human trafficking situations as a means of ensuring patient safety and helping reduce the occurrence of such incidents.
This knowledge is especially critical for first responders in the Mississippi Delta, as the region has been identified by the Administration for Children and Families of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as an area of concern for both reported and unreported human trafficking cases. Having this certification will better prepare these future nurses to support the physical and social well-being of their patients.
Coahoma Community College’s Allied Health Science program continues to build a brighter future for healthcare and nursing in Mississippi.
