GREENVILLE, Miss. — A new workforce initiative aimed at connecting Mississippi Delta residents with employment opportunities tied to a developing energy project will be highlighted next week at the Greenville Higher Education Center.
The program, “SPARK!: Creating the Skills We Need!”, is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 14, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Greenville Higher Education Center, located at 2900 U.S. Highway 1 South.
The session is part of the Spark!: Places of Innovation exhibit and will examine a workforce partnership involving Mississippi Delta Community College, the South Delta Planning and Development District, The Industrial Company and the Capps Center.
According to the Mississippi Humanities Council, the partnership is developing a workforce pipeline designed to prepare applicants for jobs connected to construction of a new energy plant in the Mississippi Delta.
Training through the National Center for Construction Education and Research, commonly known as NCCER, is being used to help prepare prospective workers.
The Sept. 14 program will examine how the training effort could translate into job creation and broader economic activity in the region.
Workforce development remains a major issue throughout the Delta, where employers often face challenges finding trained workers while residents seek pathways into jobs that offer sustainable wages and long-term career potential.
Programs that connect training directly with expected employer needs can help narrow that gap by preparing residents before large projects begin hiring.
The Greenville event will give the public an opportunity to learn more about how local education, workforce and industry partners are working together to prepare Delta residents for those opportunities.
The session begins at 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14.
