INDIANOLA, Miss. — The Crown Restaurant has grown from an English-antique business into one of downtown Indianola’s distinctive dining and shopping destinations.
The business began after Evelyn and Tony Roughton returned from England, where they had collected English furniture while Tony was stationed there with the Air Force. The antiques were initially displayed in a building outside Indianola before the couple expanded the operation and added a restaurant in 1976.
The Crown later relocated to downtown Indianola. Its menu now includes catfish, chicken, sandwiches, salads, soups and desserts, while the adjoining retail space continues the company’s gift-shop tradition.
The business also developed Taste of Gourmet, a collection introduced in 1990. The product line grew from recipes associated with The Crown and includes mixes for breads, dips, soups, sauces and desserts.
Located near the B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center, The Crown gives visitors another reason to spend time in downtown Indianola. Its combination of food, gifts and Mississippi-made products connects retail activity with the city’s tourism economy.
The Crown’s longevity demonstrates how a business can evolve across generations while maintaining its identity and connection to the Mississippi Delta.
