CLARKSDALE, Miss. — Clarksdale High School has welcomed home one of its own as veteran coach and educator L.C. Tyler returns to lead the Wildcats boys basketball program, bringing decades of coaching experience, championship success and a mission that extends far beyond wins and losses.
For Tyler, the opportunity to return to Clarksdale is more than just another coaching job—it is a homecoming.
“It feels surreal,” Tyler said. “When I left, I thought I wasn’t coming back. There’s no place like home. It’s a blessing to come back home.”
Tyler’s return marks a new chapter for the Wildcats, but his focus isn’t solely on basketball. His priorities begin in the classroom.
“My goal is to make sure my seniors graduate and my underclassmen pass their state tests,” Tyler said. “A losing season would not be a failure for me. My failure is when kids don’t graduate. I never set my goals on winning a championship.”
That student-first philosophy has defined Tyler’s coaching career.
He became the Clarksdale High School girls basketball coach in 2005, where he built a highly successful program before moving on to coach the girls teams at Coahoma Aggie High School and later Northside High School. Along the way, Tyler taught mathematics at Clarksdale High School, Coahoma Aggie High School and Coahoma Early College. He also served as an assistant coach for the Coahoma Community College men’s basketball team while coaching at Coahoma Aggie. In 2022, Tyler accepted the head girls basketball coaching position at Northside High School, where he captured numerous district championships.
While his resume includes plenty of victories and titles, Tyler says his greatest accomplishments are the lives he has impacted.
“Everybody I’ve coached is my family,” he said. “My former players always reach out to me. I have 10 former players who are now coaching high school basketball.”
Although many fans associate Tyler with girls basketball, he actually began coaching boys.
“I started off coaching boys,” Tyler recalled. “Back in 1999, something happened with the basketball coach, and they asked me to coach the boys. I told them, ‘I’m not a basketball coach,’ but everything worked out.”
Now returning to the boys game, Tyler doesn’t expect his coaching philosophy to change.
“The biggest difference in coaching boys and girls is that boys like to get out on the perimeter and play more, while girls don’t as much,” he said.
Wildcat fans can expect an exciting style of play this season.
“I plan to play an up-tempo game,” Tyler said. “We’re going to play hard and use our speed.”
The Wildcats will feature a balanced roster consisting of six seniors, three juniors, four sophomores and 13 freshmen.
“They’ve all bought in,” Tyler said. “Our approach is to trust the process.”
Joining Tyler on the coaching staff is assistant coach Senica Walton, a former player who played under him at both Clarksdale High School and Northside High School. Walton currently serves as the girls basketball coach at Higgins Junior High School, making the reunion a special one for both coaches.
Tyler describes himself first as “a man of God” and believes treating others with respect is essential to building a successful program.
“I’m a man of God, and I try to treat everybody right,” he said.
He also plans to emphasize accountability off the court.
“We’ll have study halls and tutors,” Tyler said. “If you get in trouble, you’ll pay the price.”
Away from basketball, Tyler serves as pastor of Union Grove Church. He and his wife, Jacqueline Tyler, have a daughter, Kelita Tyler.
As he prepares to begin his first season leading the Wildcats, Tyler has a simple message for the Clarksdale faithful.
“We are back. Come support the kids. Get ready.”
With a proven track record, a passion for developing young people, and deep roots in the Clarksdale community, L.C. Tyler’s return has sparked renewed excitement around the Wildcats basketball program. For him, success will ultimately be measured not only by victories on the scoreboard, but by the young men who leave his program prepared for life after high school.
