Clarksdale, Miss. — Residents from across the Mississippi Delta are being encouraged to unite on Saturday, July 11, for two community-focused events centered on strengthening neighborhoods, reducing violence, and encouraging civic engagement.
The day will begin with the “Taking Back Our Whiteoak Community Walk,” an anti-violence initiative designed to bring residents together in a visible show of unity against gun violence. Participants will gather at 9 a.m. at the Arthur Ankston location before walking through the Whiteoak community with a shared message: Stand Together. Walk Together. Stop the Violence.
Organizers hope the event will inspire neighbors to work collectively toward creating safer streets while honoring the importance of community involvement in addressing violence. The walk emphasizes that lasting change begins when residents stand together and actively support one another.
The event also serves as a call to action, reminding community members that reducing gun violence requires cooperation among families, neighborhood leaders, faith organizations, and local residents committed to making Whiteoak a safer place for future generations.
Later that afternoon, attention will shift to civic participation during the Mississippi Delta Day of Action: The People’s Hearing and Rally, which will take place at The Pinnacle at Coahoma Community College, located at 3240 Friars Point Road in Clarksdale.
The event is hosted by community organizations throughout the Mississippi Delta in partnership with the Mississippi Voting Rights Act (VRA) Rapid Response Coalition.
Organizers say the hearing was created after the Mississippi Legislature declined to hold public hearings on voting rights for Mississippians. Rather than allowing those conversations to go unheard, community leaders are inviting residents to share their experiences, concerns, and ideas for strengthening democracy throughout the Delta.
The People’s Hearing will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., followed immediately by a community rally from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
During the hearing, participants will discuss issues related to voting rights, redistricting, and equitable representation while providing residents with an opportunity to voice their perspectives on creating a fair and accessible democratic process.
Organizers are encouraging people from every Delta community to attend, emphasizing that local voices play a critical role in shaping future policies and ensuring that all citizens have the opportunity to participate in the electoral process.
The day’s events reflect two different but connected themes: strengthening communities through public safety and strengthening democracy through civic participation.
Residents interested in participating in the People’s Hearing are encouraged to register in advance. Organizers say everyone has a story to tell and a vision to share, reinforcing the event’s message: “Tell Your Story. Share Your Vision. Be Heard.”
Together, the Whiteoak Community Walk and the People’s Hearing and Rally aim to inspire meaningful action, demonstrating that positive change begins when communities come together to address the issues that matter most.
